Restricted access to Microsoft Teams data via EWS

In January 2023, Microsoft limited access to Teams data through Exchange Web Services (EWS). This change stemmed from concerns about security risks associated with third-party apps using EWS to access Teams messages. Since EWS wasn’t officially supported for this purpose, it could lead to code failures as Teams evolved and data storage methods changed.

The shift to supported methods

To ensure secure and reliable access to Teams data, Microsoft recommends using the Microsoft Graph Teams Export APIs. This officially supported set of APIs allows organizations to export various types of Teams conversations, including:

  • One-on-one chats
  • Group chats
  • Meeting chats
  • Channel messages

By leveraging the Teams Export APIs, organizations can maintain control and access to their Teams communication data while adhering to Microsoft’s supported practices.

Additional considerations

While EWS access for Teams data is no longer available, organizations can continue to use EWS for its intended purposes, such as managing Exchange Online mailboxes. It’s important to stay updated on Microsoft’s API deprecation policies to ensure applications continue to function smoothly.
