Manage Devices with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM and formerly known as System Center Configuration Manager or SCCM) is one of Microsoft’s management solutions that helps organizations manage PCs, servers, and devices as well as deploy and manage Windows-based applications and updates across an organization’s environment.

It is part of the Microsoft Endpoint Management suite of tools, and when integrated with Microsoft Intune you may manage corporate-connected PCs and Macs along with cloud-based Windows, iOS, and Android devices from a single console.

How to use Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Management? What are its Benefits?

Simple Device Management

One of the main benefits of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Management is its ability to manage devices from a single console. With this centralized management approach, administrators can save time and effort, and ensure that all devices are up-to-date and secure.

Enhanced security, scalability, and productivity with MECM

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager helps you improve security by giving you a comprehensive view of your devices, apps, and data. There are other features that can improve your organization’s productivity, scalability, and security, such as:

  • Co-management, which allows you to manage Windows devices pairing Configuration Manager and Microsoft Intune
  • Desktop Analytics, which provides insights and intelligence on your data, compared with other devices connected to Microsoft’s cloud services
  • Cloud-attached management, with Azure Active Directory (Azure AD)
  • Application Management assists you in creating, managing, deploying, and monitoring Microsoft 365 applications across a variety of devices under your management directly from the Configuration Manager console.
  • OS Deployment, using Windows Autopilot
  • Software updates, integrating with Windows Delivery Optimization
  • Company resource access, regardless of device location
  • Compliance settings, which allows you to configure specific features according to your needs
  • Endpoint protection, through different Windows Defender solutions
  • Inventory
  • Hardware inventory
  • Software inventory

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager System Requirements

The following requirements apply to all site system servers:

  • 64-bit OS is required for all site system servers, except for distribution points, which can run on some 32-bit operating systems.
  • Server Core installations are not supported for site systems, except for distribution points.
  • Avoid changing the domain name, domain membership, or computer name after installing a site system role. If changes are needed, remove the role first and reinstall it after the changes.
  • Site system roles are not supported on Windows Server clusters, except for the site database server.
  • Site server roles can be installed on a computer with the Windows role for Failover Clustering, enabling high availability through SQL Server Always On availability groups.
  • Be cautious with startup type and “Log on as” settings for Configuration Manager services to ensure they run correctly.

Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Licensing

When it comes to Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager Licensing, there are two core components to consider.

First, you’ll need Client Management Licenses (CMLs) for each device you manage with MECM, covering servers, desktops, laptops, and even mobile devices. Additionally, Server Management Licenses (Server MLs) are necessary if you plan to manage servers specifically.

By understanding these licensing components, you’ll be better equipped to make the most of Microsoft Configuration Manager for your organization. If you need further assistance in maximizing your Microsoft licensing investment, contact us.
